Explosions caused by gas leaks have been heard several times in several parts of the island these days. This was revealed by the former Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority Thushan Gunawardena during a media briefing with Chamuditha Samarawickrema recently.
Cyril Suduwella, the former head of the laboratory and advisor on petroleum, was also present at the discussion.
In particular, they point out that some changes have been made to the existing gas composition in a gas cylinder, which has led to gas leaks.
The average composition of a gas cylinder should be 70% – 80% butane but 20% – 30% but propane should be changed to 50% – 50%.
They said raising the propane to 50% would greatly increase the pressure in the gas cylinder, which would often lead to a gas leak.
They emphasized that although the former Executive Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority had instructed the Ministers and the relevant authorities during his tenure to investigate and take appropriate action, no investigation had been carried out so far.
What good is it for a country where the authorities are blindsided and unaware of the fraudulent activities of these people who are playing with human lives?
What can we do who are endangering the lives of those who are consuming this gas, except to ask their eyes to start investigations immediately to ensure the safety of the public?
