People have taken to the streets against the government for failing to address the problems in Sri Lanka. The president is urging the government to step down. Police have arrested 13 youths today during the protests.
The 13 youths who were present at the protest where they were allegedly forcibly arrested near the parliament today have been released on bail. A large number of lawyers have appeared for them free of charge under Section 119 of the Ceylon Penal Code (described as attacking the Governor-General with intent to use, coerce or prevent any legal force – etc.).
President’s Counsel Sarath Jayamanne, appearing for them, had stated in the Magistrate’s Court that the police had arrested those who had gone to hand over a letter to the Speaker regarding the no-confidence motion and that it was a violation of fundamental rights.
All the suspects were detained at the Maharagama Police Station and released on bail. All lawyers have appeared without charge.
