For the first time in the world a woman was riding a motorcycle in the middle of a ring with a flame.
Her name was Bandu Jayawardena and she represented the Sri Lanka Army’s First Women’s Brigade in 1984.At one point, she stunned everyone on board, got on a motorcycle, sped off, and soared 60 feet into the sky above a tall attic, making another leap forward through a fiery ring.
Today, the Iron Lady lives with her children and grandchildren in her retirement home in Kottawa, where she recalls her past strike with as much courage as ever.
“My hometown is Ginimellagaha in the Galle District. I am studying up to higher education at Ginimellagaha Kanishta Vidyalaya and Srira / Rathanasara Vidyalaya in Sandarawala.I had ten family members. There were many family members who joined the army and the police.I have been good at sports since my school days and I have achieved school achievements all over the country. My father taught my sister and me to run along the Gin River Dam.At that time we did not even have a motorbike in our house. But I practiced cycling and won various competitions. The first women’s brigade was started in 1979. My uncle told me about an advertisement in the 1980 gazette and on March 6, 1981 I joined the first women’s brigade. “
Thus, Mrs. Bandu Jayawardena, who joins Sri Lanka’s first women’s battalion, has also initiated the launch of its women’s show division. She has come a long way since she saw an army officer riding a motorcycle through a ring of fire. She has also set an example for the entire women’s community.
She has shown the whole world that nothing is impossible if there is will, effort, interest for something. There is a saying in our saying, “If the mind is small, the paper is small” and even if a woman has the effort and interest, nothing is impossible.
